When the indoor evaporator coil is dirty, airflow drops and the coil can freeze. When the ice later melts, the unit may release more water than the pan and drain system can handle, causing an apparent leak.

Signs of a freeze-up include weak airflow, reduced cooling, visible frost, and water appearing after the unit shuts down or after a cooling cycle ends. A dirty filter, obstructed coil, blower problem, low refrigerant charge, or control issue can all contribute. A frozen coil is not just a cleaning issue in every case.
